The name of our wine, “Moz,” is rooted in the traditions and history of the ancient city of Moz, Armenia, located in the shadow of the volcano of the same name. Moz was situated in an elevated forest area on the right bank of the Arpa River, and, given its favorable location, the city was an important trading center.
The Vayots Dzor region of Armenia is also considered the capital of various crafts. During numerous archaeological excavations, daggers, swords, buckles, rings, bracelets, armor elements, many clay vessels, and other household items of their time were found. It is also known that the surroundings of Moz flourished in the Bronze Age and later became one of the most important sections of the Great Silk Road.
In the 7th-8th centuries, about 10 thousand people lived in Moze, but, unfortunately, the city was completely destroyed during the volcanic eruption and the subsequent earthquake of 735.
The changed volcanic soil of the Vayk valley has become highly favorable to growing vineyards.
So the tragedy at the foot of the Moz volcano added a new chapter to the region’s winemaking history. Many historical facts and discoveries, as well as many scientific works, affirm this.
In 2008, in the village of Areni in the Vayots Dzor region, the oldest surviving leather shoes in the world were discovered, more than 5500 years old. A winery has also been found in the same cave, estimated to be around 6,100 years old, the oldest winery ever discovered in the world.
Now Vayots Dzor is a region famous for its vineyards with endemic varieties and ancient winemaking traditions. There are more than 400 local grape varieties in Armenia, 30 of which are used to make wine.
Remembering the history of the destruction of the city of Moz, we want to keep the memory of it in our wines so that everyone can try the tastiest wine.
We honor the history of winemaking, and our wine “Moz” is your guide to our traditions.
